In book: Bioassays, pp Short-term and small-scaled bioassays are gener ally favored. analytical methods could not account for interactions among pollutants in complex mixtures. The development of short-term genetic bioassays has made it possible to conduct mutagenicity studies on complex mixtures of indoor air pollutants.

Complex mixture was defined by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2 as either i) simple mixtures, containing two or more identifiable components but few enough that the mixture toxicity can be adequately characterized by a combination of the components toxicities and the components interactions or ii) mixture containing so many components. Current development and use of short-term bioassays to evaluate potential human health hazards of environmental chemical exposure has been the focus of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Second and Third Symposia on the Ap plication of Short-Term Bioassays in the Analysis of Complex Environmental Mixtures.1'2 Topics addressed included development and applications of bioassays.

Thus, cost effectiveness and technical feasibility dictate stepwise and perhaps iterative application -of both chemical and biological methods in evaluating the health effects of complex environmental.

vi ABSTRACT The present proceedings of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Second Symposium on the Application of Short-term Bioassays in the Fractionation and Analysis of Complex Environmental Mixtures, held in Williamsburg, VA, March &-7,includes 37 papers as well as the Keynote Address.

In the four years since the Symposium on the Application of Short-Term Bioassays in the Fractionation and Analysis of Complex Environmental Mixtures the use of short-term bioassays to evaluate potential health hazards of complex environmental mixtures has substantially increased. With this proceedings of the fourth symposium on complex mixtures, we continue to revise and extend our knowledge of genetic methods for the evaluation of chemical mixtures in the environment.

The early chapters of this volume are devoted to new bioassay techniques that are directly applicable to the monitoring of environments contaminated with.
